CMI Toyota’s environmentally friendly practices
At present cars make up to 16% of South Australia’s green house gas emissions. In May this year CMI Toyota launched their Carbon Neutral program which aims to have 1000 carbon neutral cars on the road in South Australia in a year’s time. CMI customers will now be given the opportunity to make their car carbon neutral for 24,000km, 40,000km or 60,000 km.

CMI customers will now be given the opportunity to make their car carbon neutral for 24,000km, 40,000km or 60,000 km. All it takes is a small donation which is calculated in reference to Canopy’s costs of planting trees to offset the Carbon Dioxide produced by the car.
The donation is tax deductible and goes in its entirety to Canopy. Canopy is a Program run by the Australian Carbon Biosequestration Initiative which is a not for profit company that works to link people who produce CO2 to people who have land to plant trees on.
The CMI Toyota Carbon Neutral Program is working with Canopy who has linked CMI Toyota with Bill and Norma Osborne. The Osborne’s have 50 hectares of land at Callington on which trees that are native to the area will be planted.
Each tree that is planted will become part of the title and will be protected under the title even if the land is sold. Each customer that chooses to become carbon neutral will receive a Carbon neutral certificate from Canopy as well as a sticker to display on their car. The amount a customer will pay to make their car carbon neutral varies depending on the amount of carbon dioxide produced. For example a Landcruiser 100 will cost $322 to offset the 16.1 tonnes of CO2 produced over 40,000km where as a Yaris would only cost $134 to offset the 6.7 tonnes of CO2 produced over 40,000km.
How does Carbon Neutralisation work?
The amount of carbon dioxide produced by a vehicle can be calculated as can the amount of CO2 a single tree can store over a certain time frame. Carbon neutralisation works by planting the determined number of trees needed to offset the amount of CO2 produced by a vehicle. For example 1 hectare of trees can offset 100 Yaris for a year. Unfortunately it is difficult to produce a concrete figure as the amount of CO2 stored by trees can vary between sites and depending on the tree species as they can have a different capacity for carbon.
Developed Carwash
CMI Toyota has also developed other environmentally friendly practices including the establishment of a carwash which has large rainwater tanks installed beneath the car wash, and also recycles 85% of the water used. With this set up they have managed to wash between 30-40 cars per day with out using a drop of mains water.
